About Shift

Small Shifts = Bottom Line Impact

The Shift Effect is the value of small shifts that create bottom line impact. Those shifts may be behavioral, attitudinal, or organizational.

As Founder and CEO of The Shift Effect Initiative, Tom Finn helps leaders scale up their impact and get unstuck, whether in their professional or personal lives.

For the first 30 years of Tom’s work, he operated as a coach and consultant. Now we honor that rich experience, first, by publishing Tom’s conclusions from those years in the book, The Shift Effect. Secondly, we are transforming the business into The Shift Effect Initiative, where the knowledge from those 30 years will be available not only to business and government but more broadly to challenges in the larger world.

The Shift Effect has helped leaders handle overload, become more strategic, and complete large, mission-central projects, as well as helping them repair key relationships and handle conflict.

The Shift Effect in Action

Here is an example of The Shift Effect in action in regard to conflict. Handling differences is a key leadership skill, and many people struggle with conflict. Tom used this Shift Continuum, Cower/Battle, to get some of his clients to be proactive and effective with conflict. Hover over different points on the continuum to see small shifts his clients made.

Tom’s Discovery

The Shift Effect Initiative seeks to spread the notion of small shifts throughout our society, where complexity can often stifle action. Tom’s discovery of the power of small shifts came out of his years of coaching business and government leaders. Two conclusions stood out, in evidence from 50 leaders featured in The Shift Effect book.

1) Surprisingly, many of us get stuck and lose opportunity for business or personal results because we tend to think in extremes, or either/or mindsets. We overdo habits or strengths, or we underdo needed action – in many cases because we don’t want to become something that we are not.

2) Small shifts off those extremes generate options and big results, like organization-wide system implementations, collaborations, strategic impact, and the ability to handle crushing workload.

The Shift Effect Initiative is a framework and method that helps people, conflicts, and projects to get unstuck and thrive. We are bringing the Shift Effect method to a world where complexity and stagnation can be discouraging, and where small shifts can provide momentum and positive change for individuals, teams, or societal problems.
